Extinction has recently become a catchword(时髦话). Every day entire species of plants and animals die out,and for the first time in history this is due to the actions of just one species: humans. We already know about five mass extinctions, and now a sixth seems to be under way. This one is different, because it is man-made. Deforestation(毁林) of the rain forests is just one aspect of the phenomenon. Most people may have heard about that, but few people know that most of the species existing in the rain forests have never been described by science. Often, they die out before we ever know they existed. Nobody can tell what treasures we lose, perhaps a cure for cancer or other modern-day diseases
World-famous Harvard professor Edward O. Wilson examines life on our planet in his book The Diversity (多样性) of Life. He doesn’t lecture his readers, but states in a matter-of-fact way what is known about the Earths past and the impact of mankind on its plant and animal life. Meanwhile,he suggests solutions for the present crisis.
If you are interested in the future of planet Earth and want to learn to see the bigger picture, this is the book for you. This is no light bedtime reading and will probably leave you feeling uneasy. However,it’s important for people living in the 21st century to think about how we can pass at least part of this diversity on to our children. Recent research shows that Earth needs about 10 million years to restore the lost diversity of species after a great crisis. Ten million years are not much in terms of the life of a planet, but the period is way too long for mankind. Wilson’s book should help us to start a process of reconsideration.
Judging from the context, what does the word “extinction” (Line 1,Para 1) mean?
Why is the present mass extinction different from the five previous ones?
How long does the Earth need to restore the lost diversity of species after a great crisis according to recent research?
It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
What is the chief purpose of Edward O. Wilson in writing the book The Diversity of Life?

All over China, stone carvings thousands of years old have helped to tell us the history of the people. Every year, archaeologists(考古学家) open newly discovered tombs to find magnificent bronze pots or iron implements used in royal palaces, many of them covered in Chinese characters that tell their own story. The use of Chinese characters goes back more than 4,000 years but printing is a far more recent skill, and one that went through many different stages before it became widely used.
The most important fact about printing is that the same text can be reproduced over and over again. However,in order to make this possible,a material has to be found that can take the printed word. The earliest examples of a type of paper date from about 200 BC in China and the materials used were made of hemp(麻纤维)or silk. Early in the 2nd Century there was a growing need for more paper. A court official called Cai Lun suggested that a mixture of materials could be used to make the paper. He recommended using a mixture of hemp, rags, bark(树皮) and wheat stalks(麦秆),and found that the paper was cheaper to make and also more durable. There were many after Cai Lun who improved and refined the process and different areas of China experimented with the materials that were locally available. This resulted in different types of paper being produced in different areas. The paper could be made out of any combination of bamboo, cloth, rice stalks, silk, hemp, mulberry bark and plant fibers.
Information, laws and knowledge had often spread informally by word of mouth or more formally by officials carrying messages written on bamboo. Rulers as well as traders were quick to see the valve of paper and the paper-making process spread to Korea and Japan, and then the Arab world. It probably reached Europe in the 12th century.
When did people start to use Chinese characters?
What is the most important fact about printing according to the context?
What were the earliest examples of a type of paper made of?
What did Cai Lun find after he recommended using a mixture of hemp, rags, bark and wheat stalks?
When did the paper-making process probably reach Europe?
