根据以下材料,回答{TSE}题
People from EastAsia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishingfacial expressions. A new report explains why. Jack and his colleagues fromUniversity of Glasgow discovered that rather than scanning evenly across a faceas Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes. Jack said,"Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereasEasterners favor the eyes and neglect the mouth."
The researchersstudied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions byrecording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian peoplewhile they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories:happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared howaccurately participants read those facial expressions using their particulareye movement strategies.
It turned out thatEasterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantlymore errors than did Westerners. "The cultural difference in eye movementsthat they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facialexpressions," Jack said. "Our data suggest that whereas Westernersuse the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouthless."
In short, the datashow that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. Fromhere on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic socialskills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comesto communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will findthemselves lost in translation.
